Installing a VPN on your router will increase your online security and protect all of your devices simultaneously. With technology evolving rapidly, installing a VPN directly on your router protects numerous appliances at once. This is useful for families or small enterprises who require OysterVPN’s security and protection.
Before Installing OysterVPN, Make Sure You Meet the Following Requirements on Your Compatible Router:
- Check to see whether your router has a VPN client built-in.
- Sign up for an OysterVPN account if you don’t already have one.
- Check your router setup; it might already be able to connect to OysterVPN’s VPN network.
How to set up a router with OysterVPN?
Navigate to the router’s setup page. You may get to it by simply typing your router’s IP (Internet Protocol) address into your browser, just like a URL. Here’s how to determine your router’s IP address if you don’t know it.
For users of Windows 10:
- Open the “Start” menu, type in “Command Prompt,” and press Enter.
- A console window will appear; type “ipconfig” and hit “Enter” in it.
- On the “Default Gateway” line, you should see your router’s IP address.
For users of macOS:
- From the Apple menu, select “System Preferences.”
- Then select “Network” Select “Wi-Fi” > “Advanced…” > “TCP/IP” from the drop-down menu.
- The IP address of your router will be displayed next to “Router.”
- Look for a VPN client tab in the menu bar. Usually located in your router’s advanced settings.
- This part may be located in a different location, depending on the model and brand of your router.
- To find it, move your mouse around. If you haven’t found it, your router isn’t VPN-compatible. But don’t worry: with the right firmware, most routers can be made VPN-compatible (we discuss how to make your router VPN client-compatible below).
- Follow the instructions provided by your VPN client. Here are the instructions from OysterVPN for setting up a VPN:
- Routers from Asus;
- Routers that use the DD-WRT protocol;
- Routers for tomatoes.
- Check to see if a VPN protects your connection.
- To do so, Google “what is my IP” and see whether it returns a result that differs from your own.
- If not, double-check that you followed the instructions exactly and contact OysterVPN customer service.
- Have fun with your VPN router!
Is your router VPN-unfriendly?
This is how you can solve it. If your router does not come with VPN client support out of the box, you may usually repair the problem with third-party firmware. Here’s how to do it:
Find the IP address of your router
For users of Windows 10:
- Determine the IP address of your router. If you’ve previously completed,
- Open the “Start” menu and type in “Command Prompt.”
- You must type “ipconfig” and hit “Enter” there.
- On the “Default Gateway” line, you’ll notice your router’s IP address.
For users of macOS:
- Go to the Apple menu and select “System Preferences.”
- Then select “Network” Select “Wi-Fi“> “Advanced…” > “TCP/IP” from the drop-down menu.
- The IP address of your router will be displayed next to “Router.”
- Find access to your router
- To get to your router, type the IP address from Step 1 into your browser as a URL.
- This should bring up a popup asking for the login and password for your router.
- If you haven’t updated them, look in the router’s manual (Tip: most routers may be accessed by typing “admin” for both username and password).
- Download your router’s firmware.
- Go to the DD-WRT website to see if your router is supported.
- Use the search box to find the model of your router (if DD-WRT doesn’t include your model, try OpenWRT or Tomato).
- Download the bin files for your router from the DD-WRT website.
- This is critical because the process can void your warranty or even cause your router to stop working.
- Look for the firmware installation page. It’s found under “Administration” on many router interfaces.
- You’ll have to look around till you discover it.
- The DD-WRT bin file should be uploaded.
- Once again, double-check that the file is appropriate for your browser, then upload and wait.
- Make a username and password for yourself. 192.168.1.1 is the default DD-WRT IP address.
- When you type that URL into your browser, you’ll be prompted to create a new login and password.
- Establish that your router is linked to the internet.
- Make preparations for the installation.
- Check the “Enable” bubble next to “Start Open VPN Client” on the VPN tab under Services.
- To set up a VPN router, follow the steps outlined above.
